Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has wished Jelle Van Damme well after the Belgian ended his five-month spell at Molineux. The 27-year-old was allowed to leave the Premier League club on Tuesday to return to his home country and join Standard Liege for £2.5m.

McCarthy told BBC WM: "I'm disappointed that we've signed a very good player and that it's not worked out for us.

"He's a terrific lad and it just didn't work out, but it's nice that he's been able to get back to Belgium."

He added: "That's where he wants to play, that's where he wants to be with his wife and family, so good luck to him and we'll do something else.

"I hope it works out for him back there. We did our best with him."

He did everything he could to make it work for himself and it just didn't, but it hasn't put me off signing foreign players.

Van Damme made six appearances for Wolves after joining from Anderlecht in June, scoring one goal, but struggled to adapt to life in England.

His wife remained in Belgium for much of his time at Molineux and gave birth to the couple's second child at the end of November.

Although Van Damme has been given permission to join up with Standard Liege with immediate effect, the move has not yet been officially processed and he will not be able to play for his new club until the transfer window re-opens on 1 January.

McCarthy added that the episode has not put him off signing players from abroad in the future.

"They don't all settle down immediately," McCarthy continued. "I have to say that Jelle came here and integrated brilliantly.

"He did everything he could to make it work for himself and it just didn't, but it hasn't put me off signing foreign players."

Meanwhile, the Wolves boss has praised Marcus Hahnemann for his response to being dropped from the side.

Wales international Wayne Hennessey replaced the former Reading keeper against Sunderland on 27 November and helped Wolves to a 3-2 victory at Molineux.

"Marcus turned our season around last season," said McCarthy. "He came in and was fantastic.

"We've not had a clean sheet and we've not been winning games, and I'm not going level criticism at Marcus for the goals that have been flying in.

"But Wayne has been terrific in training and I thought it was time to give him his chance again.

"Marcus was disappointed because nobody likes being left out, but he was positive. He supported Wayne and he supported my decision.

"When we won the game on Saturday he was as excited as anyone else."

Wolves, who remain in the relegation zone in the Premier League, face Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday.
