The Wanderers boss is aware his side have to start picking up points against the lesser lights to stay up. Wolves defeated Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in front of their own fans as well as winning away at Liverpool last season.
But failure to achieve tangible results against sides in the bottom half of the table meant they only survived on the final day of the campaign.
McCarthy said: "We are going to have to beat some of the teams around us next season and do better against them. It is unlikely year on year that we can beat Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, and draw with Tottenham.
"We need to be even better against the teams around us. There is less pressure and expectation on us when we play the big teams and we played well in all of those games.
"I don't think we nicked any of the results against them. That's something for us to try and do better, results against the teams around us. I'm not saying we won't beat the big boys again but we all know it's unlikely."
