Leon Clarke marked his recall to the side by salvaging a point with a 73rd minute equaliser after the visitors had led 2-1 at The Molineux.
"It was a point gained as far as I am concerned," McCarthy said after the 2-2 draw against the managerless Owls.
"We could have gone on to get a third and win the game, but that would not have been justified. Wednesday played well and deserved a point.
"When I look back at this game I will view it as a great point, as at one stage we looked like we would lose it. It was not our best performance."
McCarthy was also full of praise for two-goal hero Clarke: "Leon has the ability to be the best striker at this club and we are doing everything to make sure that happens."
