Steffen Iversen rescued a deserved point for struggling Wolves against their high-flying local rivals Birmingham City at Molineux.

Norwegian international Iversen capped an impressive display by himself and Wolves when his strike cancelled out a 49th-minute opener from Mikael Forssell.

Wolves could have taken all three points but for the first-half display by the Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor.

Wolves boss Dave Jones was delighted with his side's performance as they secured another priceless point in their battle for survival and he said: "I am pleased with a point but we did have chances to have won the game.

"Steffen could have made himself a hero if he had taken the chance in the last minute that fell to him.

"It was a typical local derby and a hard game. But we held our own against the team who are fourth in the league and we are hanging in there." Birmingham manager Steve Bruce was disappointed that his team were unable to hold on to the advantage on-loan Chelsea marksman Forssell had given them with his fifth goal of the season.

Bruce said: "I am very annoyed and frustrated. It was disappointing that after we scored we just seemed to sit back and accept that we would win.

"We really should have pushed on for the second goal. But we then got caught out and it is a disappointment that we did not win the game." Wolves could have built up a commanding lead at half-time if it had not been for the heroics of Taylor who pulled off two stunning saves.

He beat away a fierce 35-yard drive from Iversen after 19 minutes and Birmingham then had another major escape from the resulting corner Alex Rae's cross was headed goalwards by Jody Craddock only to be cleared off the line by the well-placed Birmingham right-back Damien Johnson.

Taylor then came to Birmingham's rescue again three minutes later when he denied Iversen for a second time - this time from close range after the former Tottenham marksman had been released by Mark Kennedy.

Birmingham struggled to create clear cut chances of their own as they toiled in attack during the first-half.

The one chance that did come their way fell to Christophe Dugarry whose 28th minute close-range drive was beaten by keeper Michael Oakes.

The importance of Taylor's heroics then became clear four minutes into the second-half when Forssell struck.

He was released by a pass from Dugarry and then skilfully turned Craddock before sliding the ball beyond Oakes for his fifth goal of the season.

Having kept eight clean sheets in their previous 11 Premiership games, Birmingham looked favourites to hold on to Forssell's strike.

But Wolves had other ideas and were well worth Iversen's 66th-minute equaliser after a concerted spell of pressure.

Rae's corner was sliced back across the face of the Birmingham goal by Wolves centre-half, Paul Butler.

Fortunately for Wolves it fell to Henri Camara who drilled in a low cross that Iversen bundled home at the far post.

Iversen could have completed a dream comeback in injury time when he was again set-up by Camara but this time he dragged his shot wide from eight yards.
