Walsall Match Analysis

First of all I'd like to say I am glad that Colin Lee got a round of applause when he went to the visitors dugout. Only the Billy Wright Stand and part of the Stan Cullis really acknowledged him, but from where I was standing it was a pretty loud reception.

I would also like to add I'm glad Steve Corica got a poor reception. After the years of rubbish play and lying on the treatment table picking up massive wages while at Molineux, he deserved it.

During the match, the Australian International didn't do too badly for Walsall. I think he had more shots on target in that game than he ever did while playing in the Old Gold and Black.

The first half was pretty poor from a Wolves perspective. Walsall had quite a few opportunities, with Leitao and Marcelo both wasting chances. Wolves didn't really do much with Newton and Kennedy being unable to provide quality crosses for the front two. I think that Wolves probably underestimated their local rivals in the first half but made up for that with a brilliant performance after the break.

Wolves were probably given a helping hand when David Holdsworth was sent off for supposedly elbowing a Wolves player. I have to say; from where I was sitting I missed the whole incident.

Five minutes after the red card, Wolves took the lead when Dean Sturridge hit an inch-perfect lob over Jimmy Walker. Wolves then couldn't be stopped as they put together some excellent plays.

Sturridge grabbed his 17th goal in a Wolves shirt when he finished off a great move after receiving nice ball from Nathan Blake. He has now equalled his season career best if you add the three he scored while at Leicester earlier in the season. His previous best was when Derby were promoted to the Premier League in the 1995/96 season. Hopefully that is a good omen.

Blake, who is in his best form since he arrived at Molineux in my opinion, capped things off two minutes later, in the 77th minute, when he shrugged off a Walsall defender and then blasted an unstoppable shot past Jimmy Walker.

The defence was much better than at the Stockport game and even they are hungry for goals, which is nice to see. Lescott made a few darting runs forward and found himself in good positions, although I'm sure Dave Jones would rather see him at the back. Butler looked pretty solid, as did Muscat, although Mo Camara had a pretty quiet game.

Overall, It was a pleasing victory and although I got the first scorer wrong I am quite surprised that my prediction was right! Maybe my luck will carry on to the Gillingham game. If we carry on the way we are going, I say it could well be 4-0 on Saturday.
