Wolves left North London on the wrong end of a five-goal pasting for the second time in a week and sank to the bottom of the Premiership as old boy Robbie Keane hit a hat-trick.

After losing 5-1 at Arsenal in the Carling Cup on Tuesday, Wolves went down 5-2 to Spurs, who moved to mid-table safety on the back of this victory.

Keane, who started his career at Wolves, did not celebrate any of his goals with his trademark somersault, such was his sadness at sinking his old side.

The game didn't look like a seven-goal thriller after a poor opening 25 minutes in which neither side really went close.

Keane changed all that in the 28th minute when he struck a low left-footed shot past Michael Oakes after good work by Steve Carr, Darren Anderton and Ledley King.

But Wolves hit back immediately when Paul Ince slid in on a loose ball on the edge of the Spurs penalty area to shoot home his first goal since March.

Keane had another chance to score before the break, but stabbed his shot wide, and Ince had a header saved by the legs of Kasey Keller in stoppage time.

Spurs caretaker manager David Pleat was so brassed off that he joked that he was tempted to go home at that stage, but he stayed to see Fredi Kanoute head Spurs back into the lead from an Anderton cross five minutes after half-time.

The Frenchman then went close to repeating his sensational goal against Everton earlier this season when he hit a dipping volley from 35 yards that was tipped over by Oakes.

Instead it was Keane who scored next, the Irishman sidefooting home on the volley from a deep cross by substitute Paul Konchesky in the 75th minute.

The former Charlton man set up the fourth Spurs goal seven minutes later, crossing for Anderton to get in a header that was saved by Oakes, only to see Keane prod the rebound past him.

Again Wolves scored almost from the restart, Alex Rae sliding the ball past Keller from a tight angle, but the best was saved for last as Stephane Dalmat made it 5-2, cutting in from the right to unleash an unstoppable shot past Oakes into the far corner of goal.
