Former England star Darren Anderton snapped up his first league goal for Wolves as Glenn Hoddle's side put their play-off hopes back on track.

Hoddle's men slumped to their first defeat in nine against leaders Reading on Boxing Day but breezed past relegation haunted Wednesday.

Anderton's 15-yard effort 10 minutes before the break set up Wolves for the win and Wednesday gifted Kenny Miller the second after 63 minutes.

And goal-shy Wednesday stretched their dismal run to seven games without a goal and only one win and two draws in 10 games.

Wednesday were almost behind after only three minutes when Anderton's testing corner was headed goalwards by Joleon Lescott but Steve Adams cleared off the line.

And as Wolves turned up the heat Jody Craddock twice went close but his header was blocked and a dangerous volley cannoned into a crowd of players.

Anderton was on target after 35 minutes when he rifled in a 15-yard shot after Lee Naylor's cross from the left.

Wednesday were mis-firing again after the first half setback. A spirited response saw Chris Eagles threaten but Stefan Postma saved well from the first and the second effort was blocked.

Another from skipper Glenn Whelan was cleared and in a frantic spell defender Graham Coughlan was denied by the upright when he beat Postma.

Centre-back Coughlan provided Wednesday's best early chance when he headed over the top from a corner by Eagles.

And a blunder after 63 minutes handed Wolves their second goal when substitute Miller darted in to stab the ball into an open net after a mix up between keeper Nicky Weaver and his defence.

Wednesday's goal drought reinforced the need for a new striker and the Hillsborough side will step up their move for Rotherham's 14-goal striker Deon Burton next week.

The 29-year-old has already paved the way for move across South Yorkshire by handing in a transfer request.
