Consistency Is The Key

Last updated : 26 February 2002 By Steve Hermon

Just to let you know, my name is Steve Hermon. I am a massive Wolves Fan and as of now, I hope to be writing many articles on my Football team, this being my first.

My first is to do with consistency and complacency. Dave Jones has warned the team about this on many occasions and he is right to do so. I am proud of the team’s current position thanks to back-to-back 4-1 away wins against Crewe and Stockport, but looking at the performance of some players at Edgeley Park last Saturday, I think if we would have played a team like Manchester City we could have lost.

The defensive play was poor on many occasions. Stockport’s goal shouldn’t have happened. That came from a poor back-pass and instead of booting out of the ground, Oakes took a touch and let their striker close him down and score. Kevin Muscat seems to be playing pretty poor lately as well, his touch and distribution was also poor. Maybe he has a summer move to Rangers weighing on his mind? Despite his poor form, I sincerely hope not.

Paul Butler lacks pace and was caught out on a few occasions. Just imagine if we do get promoted. Will he be able to cope with the pace of Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka? I unfortunately think not.

Joleon Lescott didn’t have one of his better games but he is still a star in the making in my eyes and after playing against his brother, Stockport captain Aaron, he proved that the older sibling is the *@*! of the Lescott family.

The star of the defence, surprising to some people, was the one, the only Super Mo Camara! (A little pause here to let you sing away.) He was actually very good. He made some very good runs and some excellent interceptions on occasions. He may not be the best player in the world or perhaps in our team but he plays with a smile on his face and gives 110% every game. That’s why he has developed this cult status and it’s great!

The defence can’t be accused of all the inconsistency and complacency though. I may get shot for this but Dean Sturridge could have and should have got a hat trick. He missed a lot of chances, which he could have easily put away. Dave Jones said after the game, we took our foot off the gas and we did. We shouldn’t take it easy. We need these goals, and goals like Mark Kennedy’s second are welcome anytime.

I was strangely disappointed after the game. We won 4-1 but I wanted a clean sheet and wanted more goals. Stockport are the worst team I have seen in a long time. I have seen better pub teams. Having Carlton Palmer as their manager shows how poor they are.

Overall, We must be more consistent in every area of the pitch and avoid complacency. As I said, I want more clean sheets and I want more goals but most of all…. I wanna’ goooooooooooo to the Premier League!!
