One point finally on the board.

Well, we’re off the mark and with a clean sheet.

However, although that’s great I felt a little disappointed at the end that we didn’t have our first Premiership victory.

I think that towards the end of the game, if we’d not been on the bottom with no points, we’d have pushed on to get all three points, but we were content with the draw, it’s a start.

It was a hugely improved performance on just seven days prior but you couldn’t help thinking it was a Nationwide fixture.

Pompey might have eight points this evening but there was nothing to choose between the two sides yet we are bottom with just one point – it’s a cruel world!

Both sides had their chances. Another golden opportunity came Henri Camara’s way in the first half but he was once again unable to apply the finish. Patrick Berger missed an open goal with a far post header and Paul Butler prevented Teddy Sheringham from scoring from a Michael Oakes fumble. Nathan Blake had a good chance in the second half when a great floated through ball found him in the box Jody Craddock surprisingly supplying the ball.

Wolves were combatitive and the shape was much improved. Rae and Ince worked tirelessly to win back the ball whenever it went loose. Some of our passing was at times poor but
Portsmouth never really got on top for any threatening spells of play.

We had some pressure but were unable to convert it into goals. We had a few goal mouth scrambles but nothing for Blake to really get his teeth into.

A real bonus was the performance of Henri Camara. He showed some great skills, trickery and pace that will bear fruit as the season progresses.

Every player gave 100% and you could sense that there was a real will to get things going after the previous three defeats.

However, we will need to give Blake more support up front. Camara was there but at times Blake was trying to hold the ball with no support helping him out.

With rumours about the potential longer term absence of Kenny Miller, Wolves might need to get into the transfer market to secure the services of a second main striker. George Ndah is similar to Camara but they’re not a Miller type player. Iversen won’t play again unless Blake gets injured.

We will score goals but not probably more than an average of 1 a game which means the defence will have to be water tight which is unlikely against most teams in the division.

At this late stage it seems unlikely that any further transfers will be made. This is a worry as we are pretty thin on the ground. Any injuries to any more key players could see us struggle.

Having seen all four games to date we’ve almost got exponentially better with each game, if you take Charlton out of the equation. We were up to the challenge that
Portsmouth posed but they are reasonably familiar foes.

By the time the
Southampton game comes around we should have Matt Murray and Mark Kennedy available for selection. It will be another tough test but we seem to be slowly closing the class/skill divide so you never know as the Saints haven’t started too well themselves.

Some interesting things to ponder on….
