Will Grigg on fire to hand Wigan late win over Wolves

An 89th-minute strike from Will Grigg gave Wigan a 2-1 win over Wolves to lift themselves out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

Grigg had been surprisingly left on the bench by boss Gary Caldwell, who had handed Adam Le Fondre his first start since his summer move.

However, the move paid immediate dividends with Lee Fondre opening the scoring with only six minutes gone, tapping home Max Power's cross.

Wolves came back into it impressively and more than deserved their equaliser just after the half-hour mark through Prince Oniangue.

The game looked like it was going to end all square with neither side looking able to break through.

But Wigan had other ideas and, with Grigg sent on for the last half-hour, managed to secure a first win in eight games.

The Northern Ireland international was in the right place at the right time to round the goalkeeper and smash home from 10 yards.

Wigan took the lead with only six minutes gone, with Le Fondre fully justifying his manager's faith in him.

The much-travelled frontman, on a season-long loan from Cardiff, stole a yard on his marker and slotted home coolly from six yards after great work from Power.

Wolves attempts at an immediate leveller were thwarted by a mad scramble in the Wigan box that goalkeeper Adam Bogdan eventually snuffed out.

The visitors came much closer when Helder Costa charged through the left channel and smashed a shot past Bogdan that touched the crossbar on the way over.

A combination of Dan Burn and Stephen Warnock did well to get back and deny Costa and Joao Teixeira before Danny Batth fired a weak shot straight at Bogdan when he might have done better.

But Wolves were looking the side most likely at this point and it was no surprise when they did find the equaliser 11 minutes before half-time.

Ivan Cavaleiro pulled the ball back to the edge of the area and Oniangue's effort was too good for Bogdan from the edge of the area.

Wolves almost took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when, from a corner, Batth's header beat Bogdan only for Warnock to hack off the line.

Wigan sent on Grigg and Nick Powell for the last half-hour to try to change the flow of the game but still Wolves looked very dangerous on the break.

However, Bogdan was equal to their best opportunity which fell to Costa.

Wigan were rewarded for pushing right to the end, with Grigg banging in his first goal in four matches to send the home supporters home happy.
