Special Feature - Wolves got a Friend in need

Last updated : 02 September 2008 By Gary Brookhouse

George is a 20 year old left-back, who can also play in two other positions, such as centre-back and left-sided midfielder.

George started out as a trainee at Exeter in 2005/06 season and in the 2007/08, he helped Exeter get promoted from the Blue Square Premier, via the play-offs to the Coca Cola League 2.

During George's career he has managed to make 37 appearances and scoring only one goal. Yet we have already signed one left-back, we have got another who is able to play in different positions.

Mick McCarthy explained to the official Wolves Website that: "Andrew Cassidy, one of Dave Bowman's scouting network, alerted us to George.

"Dave, Steve Weaver, our development coach and Taff (Ian Evans) have all watched him and when Taff said 'sign him' that was good enough for me.

"He come straight into the squad and will be fighting for a first team spot."

George has been watched by a number of clubs after playing a key role in helping Exeter win promotion back to the Football League last season.

Here are some questions that I asked the Exeter to reply to, about George Friend as a Player and how he did for them.

So how was he at Exeter?

"Very well, mature way beyond his years".

Are you sad to see him leave Exeter?

Very sad to see him leave, but wish him very well and sure he'll do very well at Wolves.

Any previous injuries we should be worried about?

Injuries? Nothing that I'm aware of.

Did you see the best of him at Exeter?

We haven't seen the best of him yet. At just 20, and with only around 40 first team matches under his belt, there is a lot of improvement still to come.

Exeter Career High?

Wembley, where he was absolutely immense in helping us get back into the League.

Exeter Career Low?

Not many as yet, I would point to one dreadful performance in a match City actually won, at Cambridge. Only poor performance I can remember from him though, if I'm honest.

Any nicknames?

Not sure, probably "Gorgeous", as that's what all the ladies call him!

Any funny anecdotes?

Others probably have some - one that sticks out in my mind was when he made his debut at Forest Green in a dreadful 0-0 on Easter Monday '06. He had a habit of accompanying every jump with a moan like you'd normally hear from a shot-putter - "UUUUURRRRGGGHH!"
