The Barclays Premier League's bottom side suffered more last-gasp heartbreak in the 1-1 draw with local rivals West Brom at the Hawthorns last weekend as Carlos Vela left it late to equalise for the hosts. That result followed similar scenarios against Fulham, Bolton and Manchester United.
"I can think of five points we've lost without even drawing breath - Manchester United, Fulham, Bolton, West Brom straight away. Had we not conceded those, we would be sat now on 30 points," said McCarthy.
"I know every team can say things like that, whether it's by performances or bad decisions, but there are five points that should be in the bag.
"It's not just concentration, or just one thing that's happened, but that's certainly cost us. The players aren't getting scarred by it, though."
McCarthy added: "Albion got a bit of fortune with their goal against us. On another day that wouldn't have happened, but I don't think they'll be scarred by it at all."
McCarthy believes Tangerines boss Ian Holloway is already a strong contender for the manager of the year award.
He said: "I would say Ian is already a contender for the award.
"Blackpool have been a breath of fresh air and had a terrific result the other evening [3-1 against Tottenham].
"I can't imagine he will alter the way Blackpool have played all season when they face us. They have been terrific but they also work hard and get back and defend. It is unlikely to be a 0-0. It was very open against Spurs."
