(John Bray's Blog) Wolves plot course - but will fans follow?

Last updated : 08 May 2008 By John Bray
Say what you like on BBC WM, write whatever you want on the internet, the route chosen by the Molineux hierarchy is clear to see.

You may disagree, but you won't change it.

McCarthy will lead the next assault on promotion, and the Eastwood fiasco will finally be consigned to the dustbin of history.

I'm genuinely sorry it didn't work out. I thought the adulation of Wolves' perennial substitute was massively misjudged, and it was the major cause for a split between fans and manager that by May had become a painfully sad chasm.

Wolves have to look forward - owner Steve Morgan wants the moaners to "sod off", and today I watched a refreshingly honest interview with the man who 12 months ago was "Super Mick".

McCarthy spoke calmly, rationally, and was positive about next season. Jez Moxey spoke about continuity in the manager's office.

If you missed it on BBC Midlands Today, there is a link at the bottom of this page with the video link of that interview.

This wasn't the Wolves manager who appeared prickly and stubborn as the season hit a mid-term malaise. This wasn't the Wolves manager who claimed his team played well against Albion - when most of us thought they hadn't.

This was the Wolves manager glad to be at the helm of a young squad with several stars-in-the-making. That's not me wearing rose-tinted spectacles - that's fact.

Michael Kightly, Sylvan-Ebanks-Blake, Matt Jarvis, George Elokobi, Wayne Hennessey, David Edwards, Andy Keogh, Kevin Foley - young players who can be as good as they want to be.

A lot of gloom was lifted for me today. But I still fear what will happen if Wolves don't start next season flying.

I still fear what will happen if Wolves don't excite us in the transfer market, particularly if we don't revamp the centre of defence.

But I don't fear Eastwood scoring goals at his next club. Good luck to him. It didn't work out, and I've no idea why. But we've still got Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

There will be problems though if the fans that have turned against McCarthy refuse to budge from their entrenched position that he's no longer the man for them.

What chance will he have, and will his team have, if that manifests itself early on next season at Molineux?

The course is plotted with Captain McCarthy on the bridge. Because of this season's disappointment, choppy waters will never be far from view.

Maybe that's just the Wolves way.

But if you simply won't allow yourself to be positive, even before a ball is kicked in 2008/09, you might as well abandon ship now.
