The Nearly Men

A 1-0 'win' on the night but it just wasn't enough to get us to Cardiff. The team's efforts over the past two months have also been not good enough, but there is nothing we can do about that now.

I have to say, I had a major rant in my last article but I can't really fault the players for their efforts tonight. They wanted it, but the only thing I could say against them is why couldn't they perform like that every week for the past two months? If we could have done that we wouldn't have even been in the play-offs.

Of course that doesn't even bare thinking about now, as we must face yet another season in the Division from Hell. It has been a long time coming and this should have been our season, but for some reason we just didn't have it in us to finish the job.

From being so frustrated after Sunday's first leg, I now feel obviously gutted, but proud that the player's proved me wrong and proved that maybe they weren't in it for the money.

I come to this admission not only for their efforts on the pitch, but because I work their on match days and I get to see the ins and outs of some things. If you went to the game, you may have seen footage on the video-wall of the players getting ready. I was the cameraman for that piece and was in and around the players in the tunnel. They proved they cared by some comments they made, with players like Blake, Butler and Rae chipping in with things like 'We've waited too long for this.'

Unfortunately we are being forced to wait another year longer but the future looks grim in my eyes. Derby, Leicester and Ipswich or Sunderland are going to be no push-over next season and I think we could struggle for a play-off place next year. I know it is early to predict this, but with the reported loss of £50m due to promotion failure, we will have to sell and some of our best players could well be on their way.

I am extremely gutted that we didn't get up there and Albion did, but we do have the consolation that they are having trouble already, with their manager and chairman fighting. We can also hope and pretty much expect that they will get stuffed almost every week and could be relegated by Christmas!

Kevin Cooper's goal was a definite goal of the season contender, but unfortunately for him, not many people will remember it, due to the main story being our failure to gain promotion.

Nice to hear the Liquidator back on the PA. Unfortunately Wolves Fans I can tell it was a one-off. My sources tell me that Jez Moxey had to be heavily persuaded to let it go ahead but Sir Jack made it his own business and told the PA Announcer to play it even if Jez and the Police Chief said no anyway!

A great start to the season, with the worst of finishes. Well done lads for your efforts tonight, but it just wasn't good enough at the end of the day. Apologies to Sir Jack as well. The lads have let you down.

Enjoy the World Cup and hopefully the 'Barmy Army' will be back on the promotion trail once again next season!

We can now only look forward and never look back!
